In any type of organization, it is essential to have in place a solid strategic planning in
order to maintain an efficient operation that will contribute to a successful growth. Strategic
planning must be aligned with the organization’s mission, vision and goals in order to achieve
intended results. Two different strategic plans from two different organizations were compared in
this paper.
The strategic plan of the UC Davis Health System is comprised of four focus areas or
specialty themes: education, research, patient care and community engagement (UC Davis, n.d.).
For each of the themes, strategies will be achieved by enlisting focus areas, approaches and
indicators of achievement. The second organization is the Michigan Department of Corrections
or MDOC in cooperation with the Michigan Public Health Institute whose strategic plan consists
of three integral parts which focus primarily on the redesigning of the managed care contract by
restructuring both the administrative and ancillary health services (MDOC, n.d.).
The difference in presentation of strategic plans is that for the UC Davis it mentioned the
organization’s goals, mission and vision statement while for the MDOC it did not. Another
interesting point between the two organizations is that their strategic plans differed in focus
based on the type of facility and services that they provide with the MDOC focusing primarily on
restructuring the payment system while the UC Davis for being an academic health care system

it is focused on improving the quality of services that they provide in both the academic and
clinical settings.
If this writer experience working as a manager at both facilities at some point in his
career, based on the strategic plans presented it can predicted that the UC Davis strategic plan is
more focused and specific with clear cut guidelines which will ensure success in achieving the
results. However, this manager cannot say that the MDOC...
