The total number is forecast to grow to 47.5 million in 2020, which will further accelerate Thailand’s position as one of the largest inbound tourism markets in the world.

Key Findings
In 2015, 7.9 million Chinese tourists visited Thailand, a 71.1% increase over 2014, and Chinese visitors now make up 35.7% of the total visitors to Thailand. The total number of Chinese inbound trips will be close to 16 million in 2020, which will be partly driven by the increased number of LCC options between both countries, while better and closer relationships between China and the host country will also be beneficial to further growth.

To handle the expected influx of tourists, the government is expanding various primary and secondary airports. Thailand’s six main airports are expected to handle 150 million passengers in 2030, up from 72 million now. One of the main expansions is Suvarnabhumi Airport, which will increase its annual passenger handling capacity to 120 million passengers. It also re-opened Terminal 2 at Bangkok’s Don Mueang airport, which is now capable of handling 30 million passengers a year.
