Government Should Postpone the Retirement Age from 60 to 65?

Topic: The issue of mandatory retirement has stirred up much debate in the community recently. It seems an increasing number of citizens now endorse this policy. Recent controversy over the mandatory retirement has aroused much social concern. The Hong Kong's population has experienced an ageing trend since the early 2000s. The proportion of people aged under 15 are keep decreasing. In contrast, the proportion of people aged 65 and above is keeping increasing. It seems that the ageing population becomes graver in Hong Kong. In order to solve this problem, government decided to postpone the retirement age. I am writing to express my support of the government’s decision to postpone the retirement age from 60 to 65 because it is one of the solutions that can alleviate the impacts bring from ageing population.

To begin with, if the government postpone the retirement age from 60 to 65, it decreases the burden on labour force and in the dependency ratio. When the elderly retire, they don’t need to work anymore and live expenditure will depend on labour force. However, for some survey, we can know the number of people aged 65 and above will increase significantly in future. In future, one elderly is supported by two working age adults; up from the level of one elderly is supported by five working age adults in 2013. In short, in order to decreases the burden on labour force, postponing the retirement age is necessary.

What's more, it is also good for the government whether the government postpone the retirement age from 60 to 65. When people become older, they will have more diseases due to the immune system is becoming weaker and do not have the ability to work. Therefore, the government needs to provide more welfare and medical care for the elderly and that will increase government spending on health...
