There are many Canadians worthy of the ‘Greatest Canadian’ title, and Wayne Gretzky would be one of them. Wayne Gretzky was born January 26, 1961 in Brantford, Ontario to parents Walter and Phyllis Gretzky. Wayne started playing peewee hockey when he was six years old and twenty short years later he was the most dominant force the game of hockey had ever seen. He overcame many obstacles proving to everyone he could make it to the National Hockey League. Wayne Gretzky is ultimately the greatest Canadian. First of all, he was named the greatest player in the NHL in 1998. Secondly, Wayne broke and set many records becoming an inspiration to all rookie hockey players. Most importantly, Wayne Gretzky was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2002.

By setting and breaking many records in the world of hockey Wayne became an inspiration to all rookie hockey players. Wayne whipped through Canada’s junior leagues and by the time he was 17 he was playing with teams such as the Indianapolis Races and the Edmonton Oilers of the World Hockey Association. He received several awards like the Hart Trophy, MVP, and the Lady Bying for most gentlemanly player. Wayne went on to become the all-time leading scorer in NHL history. Wayne became such a successful hockey player that he earned himself the nickname, “The Great One”. During Wayne Gretzky’s career he won four Stanley Cups while playing for the Edmonton Oilers in 1984, 1985, 1987 and 1988. He also made it to the finals two other times, once in 1983 with Edmonton and in 1993 playing for the Los Angeles Kings, barley missing the cup each time. (Hockey Fans." Wayne Gretzky.”) 1 Jun 2008 .
