“The Cult of Che”
What is interesting about the report is, Jay-Z makes himself sound educated when rapping. He usually talks about politics and coming up from poverty. He has so much pride for his race but puts Chey in his lyrics who puts down his generation by saying, “The Negro is lazy and indolent and spends all of his money on frivolities and booze, whereas the European is intelligent and forward-looking." What makes Che so important to Jay-Z? Did he think that Che had power and money? Or did he want to just be like him? Is that what he meant when he said, “I am like Che Guevara with bling on? I'm complex” or did he just have no idea who he really was and what he really represented. Jay-Z has the power to influence people by the lyrics he writes.
I also find it interesting that Chey Guevara’s face is all over t-shirts, baby onesies, beer, lighters, belt buckles, etc. So what image is Americans going for? What are we teaching our youth? Is it to be tough, free minded, spiritual, and independent; what is it that Americans seeks when buying their clothing? Che is represented with jean jackets, baggy jeans, ripped up black nail polish, and spiky hair. Every gender, race, and nationality among young teens are wearing his clothing. I myself have seen this t-shirt, but up until I seen this report on Fox News I didn’t know who he was or why he was important. I thought he was a famous rock star as most of us Americans would believe. Although I didn’t purchase one of these items, I always wanted to know what the big deal was and what attracts us to buy this product. If we as Americans already have freedom, why do we choose to express ourselves so negatively with a man who wanted to destroy America by supporting him and keeping his negative memory alive? If you ask the person who is wearing this shirt, he would raise his hand and say “rock on" and...
