Although there are many different classifications of abortions, the induced abortion has been the big debate among society. Intentional termination by means of dilating the cervix and evacuating the uterus is the definition of an induced abortion. The methods used differ depending on the trimester and the size of the fetus. An induced abortion is typically performed before the pregnancy is considered viable. A viable pregnancy is usually after twenty four weeks and the fetus weighs 500 grams or more. The “viable pregnancy” standards vary legally from state to statebut are generally in that range.
The controversy surrounding abortions has been a big issue since the legalization in 1973. It was legalized with restrictions after the Roe V. Wade case. This case made it legal for a woman to get an abortion during the first trimester (Week 1-13) without any restrictions. During the second trimester an abortion may only be performed if the pregnancy poses as a danger to the women.
Abortions were legalized in 1973 although there has been a change in then laws permitting abortions. Every state has different laws and standards regarding abortions. There have been many laws, restrictions, and standards created to regulate abortions since the legalization. A couple examples include: A case that took place in 1981 in Utah that required an abortionist to notify a minors parents if that minor was still living dependently at home. Also in 1982, a senate Judiciary Committee approved the Hatch amendment which gave the state and congress joint authority to regulate abortions (Retrieved April 5, 2009, from http://www.nrlc...) There have been many standards made as regards to abortions, although every state has different laws. There are always new standards and margins created by our government.
