The Raven Reply

Edgar Allan Poe’s the raven is a horror styled poem and tells the story of a man who is left lonely by the tragic death of his lover Lenore. It focuses on him one night as he is reading in his office late at night and something comes knocking at his door which turns out to be a raven which at the time the poem was written was considered an omen of death. It is told in the style of narration through the eyes of the man.

I found the way that Edgar Allan Poe used rhyme to be very interesting. One reason I found the use of rhyme to be interesting in this poem is the way that it helped to build up tension and made me want to read on to find out what would happen to the man the poem was about an example of this rhyme is the stanza “Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter, In there stepped a stately raven of the saintly days of yore. Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he; But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my chamber door Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door Perched, and sat, and nothing more and this is why I found this use rhyme to be effective because it helped build up tension and made me want to read on.
Another thing that made this poem interesting is the way adjectives were used in an effective way I found this to be interesting as it helped me to visualise what was going on the text one example of this effective use of adjectives is the stanza “And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain Thrilled me filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before; So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating`'Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door; This it is, and nothing more. These adjectives helped me to visualise the man’s office and this is why I found the use of adjectives interesting.
