Domestic Violence

Recently domestic violence has become a serious issue in New Zealand. The rate of violence amongst families has increased. For my research I was interested to find out what exactly is domestic violence, what impact does domestic violence have on society, and how can it be reduced.

Firstly, what is domestic violence? Domestic violence can be defined as a pattern of behaviour in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner. Abuse can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic or psychological. Domestic violence can happen to anyone. Anyone can be a victim. Victims can be of any race, age, sexual orientation, religion or gender. It can happen to couples that are married, living together, or who are dating. Domestic violence is a serious issue in New Zealand. The rate of domestic violence in New Zealand is higher than some larger and major countries. Women in the USA and New Zealand were surveyed to find out if they were ever physically assaulted by an intimate partner. In the USA, 22% of the women surveyed were assaulted. In New Zealand 35% of the women surveyed were assaulted. This information shows that New Zealand’s domestic violence rate is higher than USA.   I understand that New Zealand’s violence rate is a lot higher than it should be. In my opinion domestic violence needs to be prevented. People around New Zealand are getting hurt, physically and emotionally.

What impact does domestic violence have on society? Domestic violence does not only affect the victim, it also affects all their families and neighbours. Domestic violence in families, between partners also affects their children. Family violence can continue in a family for generations. If children see their parents fighting, it is possible for them to do the same. As noted by The New Zealand Public Service Association, “Kids learn a lot from their parents.
