I Am Me

I am unique in my own way. I am made up of all sorts of genes from my mother, father, grandfathers’ etc but it does not mean I am them. I am my own person with my own abilities, my own characteristics, morals, values, ethics and personality. All these factors make up who I am. I strive to be myself and I try my best to live up to my expectations.
There was a time in my life that I felt that I was constantly in the shadows of others, trapped and isolated, crying out desperately for the light. Trying to find myself was the hardest part of my life, the most difficult journey still being travelled. I suppose it is a test we all go through in life. I always felt that I had to live up to the expectations of others, my parents, my family and my teachers. Always trying to make them happy and to satisfy them, by doing that I forgot about my happiness, about my expectations, about what I want out of life.
I have to admit my friends played the biggest role in me discovering myself. It was through them that I discovered what I was capable of, but it all starts with me. Looking back now I realize how much my friends used me and walked over me. It was because I was too scared to stand up for myself. I was afraid of what people thought of me. Constantly I’d look in the mirror and interrogate myself with all the wrong questions, always asking the person in the mirror “what is it that people see in me?”. I never ever, ever asked the question “what is it that I see in me?” .I realize now that what I think of me is more important than what others thing of me. I accepted the fact that I am different and I stopped trying to be like someone else because they can never know what I want and need.
This is who I am and nobody can change that. If I decide to change it has to be for me. I learned to love myself for who I am. I shoved all my insecurities aside and turned them into my strengths.
