The writing style of James Baldwin was influenced by his life experiences and the historical period in which he lived. This is evident through investigation including research of the historical era, Baldwin’s life, critical essays on Baldwin’s literary works, the reading of his novel, Go Tell It on the Mountain, and his shorter work, “The Creative Process.” Due to the views he expressed through his writing, he also became a major spokesman for his race during the Civil Rights period.
James Baldwin had been writing most of his life, but his career really began during the Civil Rights Era when African Americans were tired of discrimination. He wrote about his beliefs that the black man was victimized, and it needed to stop. During this time, he became a civil rights spokesman for his race. He stepped up to the challenge when the Birmingham riots were at their worst and sent a telegram to the Attorney General reading, “This crisis is neither regional nor radical. It is a matter of the national life or death. No truce can be binding until the American people and our representatives are able to accept the simple fact that a Negro is a man (Black Americans of Achievement, pg. 12).” After that telegram was sent, President Kennedy wrote to Baldwin desperately asking him to help them with the crisis. Baldwin accepted and tried to help President Kennedy find a solution for the crisis.
