Dominican Republic: Environment and Environmental Issues

  1. Geography:
        a. Mountain Ranges and Valleys-
              i. The Cordillera, or mountain chains, and the valleys of the Dominican separate the country into three regions.
            ii. The Cordillera Septentrional is located in the northern region and the Cordillera Central is located in the central region.
            iii. Two mountain ranges, Sierra de Neiba and Sierra de Bahoruco, are in the southwestern region.
            iv. The Cordillera Central is the largest of the nation’s mountain chains and contains the highest mountains, including the country’s highest peak, Pico Duarte, at 10,417 feet high.
        b. Rivers-
              i. The Dominican Republic’s two major rivers are the Yaque del Norte and the Yaque del sur.
            ii. The Yaque del Norte runs northwestward through the country’s mountainous areas and jungles. The river measures about 184 miles long and is the largest river in the Dominican Republic.
            iii. The Yaque del Sur run through the country’s southwestern region. The river is 114 miles long.
        c. Climate-
              i. The Dominican Republic is a tropical country with an annual average temperature of 78° Fahrenheit.
            ii. Differences in temperature between summer and winter in most regions are slim. In the mountainous areas, however, the temperature could easily drop to below freezing in the winter.
            iii. August tends too be the warmest month of the year, while January and Febuary tend too be the coldest months.
            iv. Most of the country expirences a rainy period between May and November. The northern part of the country expirences this period between November and January though.
              v. The heaviest rainfall occurs in May, while the driest month of the year is March.
