Reflection For The Catcher in the Rye Final Project:
Holdon was the protagonist of the book, and this book is basically reflecting upon his view of the world. We were able to use his thoughts and actions to judge his personality and his ideas. This book showed that even actually reading his thoughts did not help us fully understand his character. We all had different perceptions of his personality and character. This is because Holdon’s experiences and character related to all of us in some way, which created a connection between Holdon and us.
Holdon, in the book was a 17-year-old boy living in New York City in the 1900’s. Even though that was over a decade ago, we were still able to connect to Holdon’s life and actions. This indicates that Holdon is a timeless character. He can connect to teens from any time frame to some extent. Throughout the book, Holdon was searching for an identity and a place to fit in. he goes through some common life problems that we all go through to a certain extent. He has to make decisions and sometimes, they are not always right. He did not want to grow up and he was searching for a place to fit in. In my memory box, I had added something that represents how I go through a similar mindset as Holdon. I also want to hold on to the past and, now that I am a teen, I want to go back to childhood. Teenagers, in general are not children anymore, but not quite adults yet. I was able to pick out present songs that reflect Holdon and his story. We are stuck in the middle and it is a very frustrating time for us. This also makes Holdon a universal character because the age is what makes us all relate.
The Catcher in the Rye reflects the lives of most teens and the decisions we all have to make through life. Also, it shows that, like Holdon, the idea of ‘adulthood’ is scary, in a way that we will face adult like situations, but not necessarily make mature decisions.
