      The Vikings started to raid towns because back at home, they didn’t have enough food to feed them all. When they got what they wanted they fought for something else, gold, silver, money etc. England was a very good country to raid because it is a very rich country divided into small kingdoms that fought each other. There also a lot of rich churches and monasteries.
      Vikings were famous for lightening raids along the coasts of Europe. At first, their major targets were churches and monasteries with rich pickings of gold and treasure and monks to be sold as slaves. Later they raided lots of towns. Once the Vikings destroyed most things in the place that they were raiding, they would take a few people back to be sold as slaves.

      When the Vikings are on the longboat, each man stores his things in a chest which he sits on to row. Viking warriors wore helmets made from leather or iron. A Viking battle-axe was capable of chopping through shields and helmets. Spears were thrown in battles and used for stabbing the enemy. Helmets and chain-mail are only for wealthy jarls. Viking swords were made from pole of iron with steel edges. The handles were sometimes decorated with gold and silver. The Vikings gave their swords names like 'Leg-Biter'. Vikings swords were handed down through families.

      The word ‘Viking’ means a pirate raid.

      I think the Vikings went fighting and raiding because they needed food, money etc, so they stole it off of others and then became enemies. I think the Vikings also enjoyed raiding others lands because they were so strong that they hardly got defeated themselves.
