Heathcliff

In Wuthering Heights, I realize that Heathcliff is a dynamic character. It is very hard to fully understand his complex mind, so we have to look at his childhood, his relationship with Catherine.

  1) The mindsets of social status cause his love broken and making him become a vengeful man.

      Heathcliff would have been able to marry with his sweetheart if he weren’t cast down from his high status to a lowly servant. Catherine would have been married Heathcliff and lived a happier life if she had broken away from the conventions of society and disregard his social status.
      The problem of social status affects them. The mindset at that time is   most people brought up at a high class would choose to marry into money and be unhappy rather than choose emotional happiness.

      “It would be degrade me to marry Heathcliff now…” that he only hears and leaves immediately without a word. Three years later, that he returns makes everyone surprised so much under his new cover. Heathcliff despises Hindley and sets the stage for his revenge.

  2) Heathcliff’s love to Catherine changes his personality.

      Heathcliff changes in appearance, attitude, but steadfastly refused to change and adapt his love to Catherine. If the love does not constantly change and adapt then there is no hope for a strong relationship. He regards Isabella as a tool for his plot causing her to spend a misarable life.

      The death of Catherine makes him depressed. He unconventionally commits suicide by refusing to eat and living in isolation. He also asks Catherine’s ghost to haunt him till his last days on earth. He is so infatuated in love that he can’t escape the past.

      Like a motivation, the death leads him to revenge for all wrongs done to him. In fact, both Hareton and Cathy are torment.

      Although he can cruely do more, he refuses to do. His unchanging love, the main source causing a lot ot pity, changes his mind. Heathcliff is about to strike Cathy...
