Full metal jacket
A group of Marine recruits are at Parris Island. They get their heads shaved and then assemble to meet their drill sergeant, Hartman. Hartman immediately begins tearing them apart and verbally abusing them. As the recruits go through basic training they begin to more and more resemble Marines. All the recruits are assigned infantry except Joker, who is assigned to Basic Military Journalism.
After graduation, on the platoon’s last night in Parris Island, Joker is ordered to watch over the weapons. While doing so, he discovers another Marine “Pyle,” loading his rifle with live ammunition. Joker tries to talk him out of doing something stupid but fails. Pyle then kills Hartman and commits suicide. After the drill sergeant is killed by Pyle and Pyle committed suicide, the movie then jumps forward to Vietnam.
During a patrol, the squad leader is killed, leaving Cowboy in command. The squad becomes lost, where a sniper pins them down and wounds two of them. Trying to lure more troops into the area, the sniper doesn’t kill the wounded soldiers. As the platoon maneuvers to locate a covered position, Cowboy is killed.
With Cowboy dead, the troop’s machine gunner, Animal Mother, becomes in charge. With smoke grenades providing cover, troop ends up catching the sniper which happens to be a little girl. She is shot and wounded. The troop then begins to argue on whether or not to kill her. After some hesitation, Joker shoots her with his pistol. The film ends with the Marines marching toward their camp, singing the Mickey Mouse song and Joker saying that, although he is in “a world of shit,” he is glad to be alive and not afraid.
