English Essay about ‘The Warden’
‘The Warden’ is about Reverend Septimus Herding who’s been appointed as the warden of a hospital. He does not question the difference between his salary and the weekly allowance given to the old men until John Bold gets involved. That is the reason why Eleanor is involved with John Bold because he is her suitor.   When she asks him to stop the campaign he does so but the case still goes on because of other parties. John Bold marries Eleanor and Mr. Harding quits his job without letting his thoughts known.
From what I have read so far ‘The Warden’ I could see that Anthony Trollope’s writing style was a bit different because at the end of the extract the 3rd person is changed to the first person so the author is narrating the story. It’s a bit unusual because usually the narrator does not really get involved in the story except for retelling the event. That was one of the things that got my attention. As soon as the 3rd person was changed in the last paragraph I realised that the author was getting involved. In the paragraph he actually assures the readers that Eleanor (his character) was a naive young woman and did not have different thoughts about her planned action.
It would be quite interesting to know if Anthony Trollope knew exactly what would happen in his novel when he started writing it or did he go with the flow and make things up on the way. Because in the last paragraph in the extract he assures us that Eleanor did not know what would her actions lead to, which means he knew what his characters would do in the novel or did he come up with character descriptions first and come up with the plot as he kept on writing?
It feels like the narrative voice in the passage is used to foreshadow what’s going to happen later in the novel because the author seems sure and he sounds like he’ s predicting what is going to happen next but he probably already knows the plot as he came up with it.
