Symbols of Hemmingway

The Old Man and the Sea                      
      “Ten percent of the story is what you are told in the book.   Ninety percent of the book is what you have to figure out.”   I think this quote is true about the book “The Old Man and the Sea.”   I am going to tell you about three of the many symbols in this book.
      The first symbol in this book is the little boy.   The little boy in the book helps out the old man by getting him supplies and doing whatever the old man says.   This little boy represents Hemingway as a kid.   So I think Hemingway really tried hard to make this little boy how he was as a kid.
      Another symbol in the book, is when Hemingway catches the huge fish.   I believe this great fish represents Hemingway’s big and great novels that he writes.   This fish is important to Hemingway because Hemingway really wants to write a big novel.   But Hemingway admits it is hard for him to write about his past.
      The last symbol I am going to tell you about is the sea.   I think that the sea represents Hemingway’s wives. I think this is why Hemingway wanted people to refer to the sea as either “El mar” or “La mar”.   If people refer to the sea as “El mar” then they think the sea is dangerous and scary.   If people refer to it as “La mar”   they think the sea is full of beauty and peace.
      As you can see there are very many symbols in this book.   The boy, the big fish, and the sea.   I don’t know what you think but I think that if Hemingway wrote an auto-biography like this then he must have had a very exiting life. So don’t be like critics and judge a book too easily.   Read the book and think about it and some symbols.   Who knows you might find some of the symbols.
