To Kill a Mockingbird

During To Kill a Mockingbird, a small town in the south experienced a change that transformed America for years to come.   Racism has been a controversial issue around the world for a very long time and although most people no longer favor one race, it was once a big problem, especially when the book was written. Nevertheless, Harper Lee’s classic still has people arguing over whether or not it portrays racism in the United States correctly.
The main character in my book is Scout.   Scout’s father, Atticus, is a highly respected lawyer, and related to almost everyone in town in some way or another.   In Maycomb, Scout’s hometown, racism is discreet yet practiced.   I believe that most people in the town know that it is wrong to separate people because of their color, but are too proud and somewhat pressured into not speaking up.   Scout and her brother, Jem, are highly influenced by the community around them and mostly have the same point of view on the topic as the rest of them.
However, reality is soon put into perspective when Atticus takes on a case to defend an African American man in court.   The man, Tom Robinson, is accused for raping a white woman.   Even though the evidence could not automatically charge him for the crime, it was a white mans word against a black mans, and, even in court, a white man had the advantage.   During this process, not only was Atticus affected, but the entire population of Maycomb.
Jem and Scout were affected almost immediately after their father’s decision.   At first, they were not entirely supportive of the idea, but it was a life changing event.   Every day they were made fun of for being “nigger lovers”, even by their own relatives, and it definitely took a toll on their family.   As stated before, Jem and Scout were both impacted by the choice, but at different times in the story.
Jem is the oldest and is very mature.   His role model is his dad, and he and Atticus have many similarities....
