Advertising promotes excessive consumerism

What does advertising do for people? Mainly, it is there to inform people and make them buy different products.
First of all, advertising influences people’s opinion upon the quality of a product. In other words, companies use it to make money off consumers. Needless to say this helps to improve the economy of a state, so it could be counted as a major advantage, even though it burns holes in people’s pockets.
As a general rule, when someone goes shopping, his or her attention is drawn by colourful commercials which promise that a product is the best from its class and also the cheapest. Naturally, people intend to spend their money on such things, and some do it although they do not have any use for the product they are buying.
However, by means of advertising people find out about things that could seriously improve their life. For instance, an elder who cannot hear well anymore should be able to easily find a high quality hearing aid by reading the newspaper or watching television.
One very convincing point against the idea that advertising promotes excessive consumerism is the information people get on every product that is on the market. This means that people who are looking forwards to buying new things will not buy a dozen of them and try each one of it for its quality, but buy only a product that is well known for its reliability and long life properties. Clearly, this reduces the excessive consumerism.
Taking everything into account, I am inclined to believe that advertising is not promoting the kind of consumerism that is chaotic and not needed, but, on the contrary, it promotes buying things in a way that is most advantageous for them and using good sense of reasoning before purchasing anything new.
