Modernization in Phil. Context

Is Modernization relevant in the Philippine context?

  We began the discussion by giving definition to modernization.

Tessie: Modernization is the process of transformation from traditional or underdeveloped societies to modern societies.

Debra: Basing on our previous discussion of Power/Knowledge, modernization to me is the view of western societies which they also enforce by use of their power as a developed country. It seems to me like a pressure on undeveloped societies to be the same as that of developed countries.

Jezile: this also gives western societies implicit and explicit basis for modernization.

Relevance to the Philippine context:

John: this is relevant in the Philippine context because we are, more or less, a traditional society and we are aiming for modernization. The main reasons seems to be because we were formerly colonized.

Shenna: The Philippines is in the process of mdernizing. We can relate this because Philippines was a former colony and we can see pressure from the colonizers. However, as we can see, we are still an underdeveloped country and this pressure is a bit too much for our country.

Charmaine: We do look up the forerunners of the modernization theory, since we want what they ave right now. Money, resources, relatively a better life compared to what most of the Filipinos have. They have all these things because they've modernized and folllowed the way of the world. On the other hand, we want to keep our independence - we want the traces of colonization or traces of the West, to be gone. So we come to a point that we have to compromise because we want modernization, but we also don't want to totally give in to the ways of the West.

Leah Joy: The Philippines needs modernization not because we were a former colony but mainly because it is how we can catch up with the demands of present times, for our country to progress and survive.
