Differences Between Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet
Romeo and Juliet locked eyes from across the room and immediately fell in love with one another; some might say it was love at first sight. Their love for each other is stronger than any force, and their bonds inseparable. But how alike are they, Romeo being a very romantic “in the now” character versus Juliet, a very practical shy girl.   The central difference between the two characters is their personality.

Romeo is a passionate, extreme, intelligent, and romantic man, and admired throughout Verona. He is loyal to his friends, but his behavior is somewhat unpredictable. At the beginning of the play he is madly in love with a woman named Rosaline, but the instant he lays eyes on Juliet, he falls in love with her and forgets Rosaline. Taking this into consideration, Shakespeare gives us every reason to question how real Romeo’s new love is, but Romeo goes to extremes to prove the seriousness of his feelings. He doesn’t think before he acts and his only interest is love, he knows perfectly that Juliet is a Capulet but doesn’t even take that into consideration. He would rather die than live without his beloved.
Juliet, on the other hand, is an innocent girl, a child at the beginning of the play, and is surprised by the sudden power of her love for Romeo. She is very practical and almost the complete opposite of him.   She is of an age that borders between immaturity and maturity and she seems to be an obedient, sheltered, naïve child. Many girls her age are getting married and having kids, while she hasn’t even thought about love or marriage.
These star-crossed lovers have plenty of differences but work their way through these problems in order to be together. This is indicative of the power of love, one of the main themes of the play.
