I, Too
This poem reflects the struggle of the Blacks for civil rights in the 20th century in America on racial injustice. "I, Too" by Langston Hughes written when he was 23years old in 1925 is an excellent example of a poem using the word "I" as something other than its literal meaning. "I, Too" is about the segregation of African Americans by the whites and how soon segregation will come to an end. The poem is written in five stanzas.
The first line "I, too, sing America" indicates the national anthem, and symbolizes unity throughout the nation. This meter in particular is as important as the entirety of the poem. It means not only whites are Americans, but African Americans are citizens and should be treated equally. In the following stanzas, the word "I" is used several times. The first line of the second stanza gives a clearer meaning of what “I” in the poem means. "I am the darker brother" -- meaning the African American, the word “brother” symbolises equality and acceptance by showing they are the same regardless except for the colour of their skin. This stanza addresses the present state of relationship between the white and African American.
The tone in the third stanza is more positive. Tomorrow is used metaphorically by Hughes to mean the future. The stanza reads "Tomorrow, I’ll be at the table when company comes. Nobody’ll dare say to me, "Eat in the kitchen," Then". The use of "I" helps show the African American community will soon rise and be one with the rest of America. The table has ambiguous meaning it...
