Music has the ability to capture the hearts of many people.   Most people are attracted to the sound of a song, but the noise you hear is not as meaningful as the words being sung in the lyrics. Lyrics to a song can have a meaning that relates directly to the listener, and affect them in a mental or emotional way.   Song lyrics contain poetic devices that enhance the beauty of the song, and strengthen the connection the listener has to it.   Whether people realize it or not, alomost every song contains poetry.
Book symbolizes life
Symbolism is used throughout the course of Natasha Bedingfield’s song, “Unwritten.”   In poetry, symbolism is the representation of an idea or feeling, usually by an object.   The object represents something that is deeper than itself.   It is used in all kinds of poems, and it makes the poem have a deeper meaning than what appears.   In this song, a book symbolizes Bedingfield’s life, and the creation of a fresh start to it.   The first line starts out by saying, “I am unwritten.” (Bedingfield ll 1) She is metaphorically comparing herself to an unwritten book. The book symbolizes her life, and the fact that she is “unwritten” represents how her book is not written.   Bedingfield then says, “staring at the blank page before you,” meaning that she is literally looking at a blank page.   However, because a book symbolizes her life, a “blank page” in a book represents the future of her life.   The page is blank because nothing has happened in this life that she is creating a fresh start to. “Staring” at the blank page, she is trying to figure out how to create this fresh start to life, and what to do.   The chorus says, “Today is where your book begins,” and it is talking about the actual start of the new life.
