Activity # o1.

Generating Waves

I. Objective
Propagate waves in water.

II. Materials
    A. Water
    B. Basin
    C. Cork or Bottle cap

III. Procedure
    1. Fill the basin with water up to depth of 5cm. Wait for the water to be still.
                                    [pic]
    2. Gently dip your finger in the water, observe the surface of the water closely.
                                  [pic]
    3. Dip your finger in the water continuously at a regular rate. Record your observation.

    4. Place the cork or bottle cap on the water similarly, dip your finger continuously on the water. Decribe the motion of the cork or bottle cap.

IV. Guide Questions
    1. What did you observe when you dip your finger once in the water?
The water produced only one wave when I dipped my finger only once in the water.

    2. How about when you dip your finger several times in the water?
Several waves were generated when I dipped my finger several times in the water.

    3. Describe the motion of the cork or bottle cap as you dip your finger in the water for several times?
The bottle cap moved back and forth in an up and down motion when I dipped my finger several times in the water.

V. Conclusion
It takes several displacements to generate several waves.

VI. Application
Do insects generate waves when they land on the water surface?
Yes, because of the displacement created by the insect together with it’s velocity. This will cause the water to move back and forth to form waves.
