Groups of tall, grimy smokestacks dominate the grounds of an electric plant. The towers of filth soon begin to wake up. As they begin to become active, enormous sounds of its core rattle the earth like earthquakes. Small clouds of dark-grey smoke begin to ooze out of the smokestack. As time goes by, the clouds start to become thicker, darker, and larger. They pick up in speed and twirl in the wind until the smoke finally reaches the atmospheric level. Soon, the thick clouds of black death begin to assimilate with the stratosphere as it flows like rivers towards cities, people, forests, and animals.
Coal is one of the dirtiest fossil fuels used in the world. However, because of it’s ever abundance, it is one of the leading sources for energy especially in the state of Georgia. Unfortunately, what most economists and power companies fail to realize is that the burning of coal is one of the leading causes of global warming as well as smog and air pollution in the world. As the black, dirty, grimy coal burns, particles such as nitrogen oxide and organic sulfur are emitted into the atmosphere through smokestacks. As these particles rise and meet with the elements present in the atmosphere, such as sulfur mixing with oxygen (sulfur dioxide), they create new compounds that pose severe threats to all species on earth and earth herself. Compounds like sulfur dioxide cause harming things like acid rain or depletion of the ozone layer and since these hazardous particles are emitted into the air everyone and everything is exposed to it. Because of the harm caused by coal energy, many corporations and agencies (as well as the government) are pushing for cleaner coal, which can be done through clean coal technology. Electric companies or other companies who use coal as an energy source are now using much more sophisticated technology, such as coal gasification or carbon capture and storage, to clean the harmful emissions of coal. Sadly, this technology is only used by few...
