Comparing Puritan Worldviews

Puritans were very critical of the religious practices of the Church of England and they advocated purity of worship and of doctrine.   Anne Bradstreet and   Edward Taylor were Puritans that wrote poems and both were born in England.   Jonathan Edwards is an author that was a Puritan, but was born in America.   There are similarities and differences between these three writers in their poem/stories.
When learning about the three writers one can say that they all three lived in Massachusetts.   The writings included metaphors in the writings, but in different ways.   Anne, Edward, and Jonathan were very religious and used the puritan religion to guide them through there writings and used it as part of the writings.   They are all involved in some sort of leadership and or government.   The three writers also lived in the same century.   In their writing they did have similarities, but there were also many differences in them.
The many differences that they have are explained in the next few sentences.   Anne was a woman that wrote many different poems and her family published them with out her giving them permission.   She used her life of hardships to   help her write her poems and one of the first colonial Americans.   She use inversion in her writings, such as In the poem "Burning of Our House"   it starts out with, "In silent night when rest I took", instead of In silent night when I took rest (pg 97).   Edward used conceit to compare things in his poems. In the poem "Huswifery", he compares himself to a spinning wheel (pg101).   Lastly, we have Jonathan who used a lot of imagery in his stories and sermons.   In the "Sermon from Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" Jonathan uses terrifying imagery.   He wants people that read or listen to this sermon to experience the horrors if they do not repent their sins and obey God's laws (pg 105).
