Same Sex Marriage: The Last Great Discrimination

America is, supposedly, the land of the free and the home of the brave. America is, supposedly, a place where every person can make his claim of life, liberty, and happiness.   America is, supposedly, the land where equality and justice have no parallel.   This glorified image would be true, except America, the land of revolutionary equality, still, in this day and age, maintains discrimination. Despite contrary belief, discrimination still exists, and is most prevalent among the homosexual community. They are denied marriage, and in essence, love.   The laws preventing same sex marriage are in dire need of abolishment.

Regardless of religious belief, denying marriage to homosexuals is discrimination. Many religious leaders would argue that permitting sex same marriage would defile the sanctity of marriage. This is not necessarily true, marriage in its simplest terms, is love.   Are gays not allowed love? Denying a person of love is discrimination in its finest form.   According to Webster’s dictionary discrimination is defined as, “Bias or prejudice resulting in denial of opportunity. Discrimination is practiced commonly on the grounds of age, disability, ethnicity, origin, political belief, race, religion, sex, etc. factors which are irrelevant to a person’s competence or suitability.”   This shows that the denial of marriage is direct discrimination. It is startling that in a country that prides itself on tolerance and equality such prejudice exists.   As a country, America has set the bar for acceptance, and it is only to logical to do so again to maintain its status as the world’s leader in tolerance.   America needs to legalize homosexual marriage to reassert itself as the international leader of civil rights.

Catholics stand against both abortion and against same sex marriage, despite the fact that same sex marriage would indirectly decrease abortion rates.   Catholics believe both are wrong, but this is a...
