Introduction
Afusing Elementary School created an Early Childhood Development for the last four years through the initiative of Mr. Proceso T. Mariñas, the principal of the said school and the Parents and Teachers Association. The first two years it was assisted by the PTCA and in 2008 it was already subsidized by the Department of Education.
The need for adequate pre-school learning has been felt particularly in the public elementary school. So in pursuant to DECS Order No. 64 s. of 1994 which mentions among others the lowering of entrance age of Grade One Pupils to six (6) years old starting SY 1995-1996, it is only important that the children are prepared socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually. As such, many children entering Grade I without preschool experience and having apprehensions about school will make a smooth transition from home to school.
The eight week curriculum also known as the Early Childhood Education has been purposely formulated to help develop the social, motor and other readiness skills of young learners. It consists of skills/objectives and developmentally appropriate practices mostly made up songs, games, stories, movement and other play activities. The carefully selected activities serve as shopping list for teachers to choose which are most applicable to their particular lesson. These activities are aimed to make children feel that learning can be pleasant and enjoyable.
The ECE curriculum has been revised in line with the thrust of the Basic Education Curriculum which gives permission on making each child a reader. Among other things, it focuese on developing reading readiness.
The Curriculum Development Division, Bureau of Elementary Education prepared the Readiness Skills Workbook which consists of varied appropriate activities and exercises. The exercises covers the areas of reading, writing, numeracy, sensory perceptual and socio-emotional.
