Tragedy results when scientist Victor of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein attempts to tamper with nature and bypass God when creating a man out of spare parts. When Frankenstein brings his newly assembled monster to life, he is, in essence, "cheating nature" by bringing into being a creature who is technically not supposed to exist. This disturbing of nature wreaks havoc on the life of Victor. From the moment he brings his creation to life, all the natural forces of the world, most of which Victor has vigorously studied, seem to be bent against his well being. Shelley couples meteorological settings with Victor's mood, and the characters in the novel change with the changing seasons.
