Reflective Paper #1:
Critique Davis’s assertion, “Engineers should hold professional responsibilities beyond their code of ethics.”

Overview and Objectives

The purpose of this assignment is three-fold.   First, this assignment provides you with an opportunity to receive feedback on your writing.   Second, completing this assignment allows you to begin learning how to articulate a coherent and persuasive argument. Finally, this paper offers you an opportunity to reflect upon your own beliefs on engineering ethics and your role as an engineer in society.

Your objective in this paper is to critique Davis’s argument by either defending Davis or arguing against his position. Through your critique, you should be able to identify supporting material to bolster YOUR assertion. That is, you should provide examples from the article, class discussions, personal experiences, and/or historical events to support your position. Davis suggests engineers should follow a code, but he extends this by asserting engineers should hold responsibilities above and beyond their professional code of ethics. If you agree with Davis, what standards should apply to these responsibilities? Who decides what these responsibilities are and how are they decided. These questions represent some of the issues and considerations you may choose to tackle for this paper.

This assignment should be 2-3 pages in length, double-spaced and 12 pt. font. If you cite external references, please follow AIAA guidelines for bibliographic entries.
