Another well known Genocide is the Darfur Genocide. In this genocide, the separation of the population was according to religion. It started when radical Muslims formed the Muslim Brotherhood with the goal of creating an Islamic state. Soon, the extreme group formed a political party that gained government positions (Levy). The radicals then led a “campaign of Islamization and Arabization” (Levy 19). They blocked foreign aid to the minority group and caused more than 500,000 people to starve to death.   (Levy 19-20). The radicals used government soldiers and a hired group of mercenaries, known as the Janjaweed, to kill, torture, and poison the non Islamic people (Levy 25-26). This is an example of the systematic destruction of the minority group. Clearly, genocide has devastating effects on society, which is why it needs to be prevented by the United Nations (U.N.). It is one of the main organs of the U.N., which are the General Assembly, the Security Council, the International Criminal Courts, the Trusteship Council, the Economic and Social Council, and the Secretariat. The International Criminal Courts (ICC) was created by the U.N. after The Second World War to deal with genocides and the people involved in it (Black).   One major problem with the ICC is that it cannot prosecute crimes committed before July of 2002 (Black). Also, the United States, China, Russia and India are against the court (Black). So, even with the efforts of the ICC, genocides of the past remain unresolved, and without the support of the U.S., the court won't get much recognition, leaving them unsettled. This is why the United Nations need to improve the ICC and create a subdivision that will aid in preventing and stopping genocides.Genocide, a problem all over the globe, has caused destruction to people and allowed hatred to grow within racial, ethnic, and religious groups.
