      Students charged with underage drinking

Two Monmouth University students were charged this morning with hosting a drinking party for fellow students who are below the legal drinking age, police said.

Police also charged 14 people who were at the party and under the age of 21. The two men who owned the property on Wenning Court were hosting a party, they were charged with providing a place for underage people to consume alcohol, police said.

The two were also charged with violating a township ordinance for consuming alcohol under the legal drinking age while on private property, police said.

Sgt. Greg Schenck found an intoxicated person on Monmouth Road shortly before 3 a.m. and learned that the person had been drinking at a Wenning Court residence, police said.

Officer Christopher Brady arrived on Wenning Court and found a party in progress at the residence. Officers Alon Bercovicz, Luke Sciallo and Ryan Vaccaro responded to assist. Officers saw numerous partially full and empty beer cups throughout the home and confiscated three partially consumed kegs of beer, police said. Police took into custody a 17-year-old youth from Staten Island. He was released later to a family member pending juvenile complaints, authorities said.

Officers also issued township ordinance violations to 14 people at the party for consuming alcoholic beverages while under the legal age on private property, police said.

All but five of the 14 people at the party attend Monmouth University, police said.

Drinking underage has become a crisis in the U.S. Some people say that its pure irresponsibility, I agree, but we must look at it from the students view. People are known to judge people for their actions based on information they receive from a third party. We don’t know if these students just needed a break from life for a while, or if they felt left out because they don’t drink their brains...
