KING LEAR STUDY QUESTIONS
King Lear decided to take no further part in the kingdom of his country, so he decided to divide the kingdom. He proposed test to his daughters, he asked his three daughters to tell him how much love each had for him so he might divide his kingdom between them according to their love for him.
Cordelia declared that she loved her father more than words could tell. “I can’t heave my heart to my mouth.” And she also said that she loved her father like how a daughter should love her father. Her reference to “nothing” suggest that she was disowned by her father and King Lear had no family and no wealth in the end.
Sight and blindness become important for the rest of the play because that was the two major theme of the play.
Cordelia meant when she said “i know you what you are.” Was that she knew that her sisters were dishonest and their words were untrue and that they tricked their father to get part of his kingdom. The sisters said about their father near the end of the scene were that their father was old and they are going to hurt him and take his power from him.
The two views of nature contrasted in the action of this scene was good at first, and then it was viewed as evil. The parallels i see between this scene and the first one is the deception of children on their fathers, because in the first scene King Lear was tricked by his daughters, and in the second scene Gloucester was tricked by Edmund (Gloucester’s illegitimate son).
What bothering Goneril is that she is having difficulties as she plays host to her father and his knights because she wants to be rid of him as soon as possible. She instructs Oswald to provoke Lear so that his actions will give her a reason to evict him.
He wanted to serve Lear because he cared for him and did not want him to be hurt by his daughters and their evil plans. This is ironic because Kent was banished from the kingdom and however he wants to help the king so he came back disguised as a beggar....
