Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 17, 1706.   He was born to father Josiah Franklin and mother Abiah Folger.   His father was a soap maker, but also very religious.   His mother was a stay at home mom.   Abiah, Benjamin’s mother, was Josiah’s Franklin’s second wife.   Benjamin was one of seventeen children.   He attended the Boston Latin School for two years but could not graduate due to the money situation at home.   His education ended by the time he was ten years old because he had to work to help his family make some more money.   By the time Ben was twelve years old, he had become an apprentice of his older brother James Franklin who was a printer.   Ben’s brother James taught him all about the

printing trade.   James Franklin soon developed The New England Courant, the first newspaper in the colonies.   In this new newspaper James had small articles that were made by him and his friends, Benjamin wanted to write one but James would not let him.   Benjamin wanted to be apart of it so bad that he decided to write under the name “Silence Dogood”.   Benjamin wrote many letters for the newspaper under this private name.   It was a great success and the whole town talked about it, but finally Ben told his brother the truth about him writing under the private name behind his back.   You would expect James to be happy about it because it was a great success, but instead he was very unhappy and ignored him while his friends supported him.   This developed a great deal of jealousy between the brothers.   Soon after the incident, Franklin realized that this was not the life he wanted and ran away to Philadelphia.   When Franklin arrived in Philly, he was wet and messy but used the last of his money to buy some rolls to eat.   While wet and messy he met his future wife Deborah Read on October 6, 1723.   Franklin searched for a job in this new city....
