In 1950, China encouraged a lot of families to have children mostly so they had a stronger army and more workers, but in the 1970s, it began to get densely populated. The government tried to influence people not to have as many children, but as it didn’t make that much of a difference, in 1979, they brought in ‘the one child policy’.
The one-child policy meant that families could only have one child to help bring down the population of a massive 1.3 billion, if a couple wanted a child, they had to apply for a certificate first.
To help people agree to the rule, they bribed people by saying if they only have one child, they would get free education for them, an extra months salary per year, pension benefits, food, health services and more, whereas if they didn’t, they would have to pay for the education for all of their children, they don’t get any allowances, no pension benefits and fined a lot of money.
If they don’t pay their fine, their land is taken away, their house is destroyed, their child cant go to school and they could get fired from their job. Also if they work with a group of people e.g. an office or factory, they would all get a bonus, but if one person gets pregnant for the second time everyone loses their bonus. All the people they work with would pressure them into getting an abortion and bully them until they did.
Another way to stop people having babies are ‘the granny police’ what were elderly women who were there to make sure younger women were taking there pill, if they suspected anyone was pregnant they would tell the authorities as well as trying to persuade the women to get rid of it by telling them how they were affecting the country.
However, there was some unforeseen consequences to the one child policy, including; ‘little emperor syndrome’, a lot of orphans - mainly girls, high divorce rates, no wives for men and ’the red envelope.’
