Perceiving and Believing
Basic Critical Thinking
1. What detail of events has each writer selected to focus on?
The detail of events that each writer selected to focus on was the assassination of Malcolm X while he was addressing a crowd at the Audubon ballroom on 166th street. .(Chaffee 2012, p.141-412)
2. How has each writer organized the details that have been selected? Bear in mind that most news organizations present what they consider the most important information first and the least important information last.
The New York Times report focused on the assassination of Malcolm X and his first words before he was shot, they also focused on the person or persons who did it. The New York Post article also mentions the firebombing that had happened at Malcolm X’s home and stated that perhaps Malcolm was going to name out the men who did it. .(Chaffee 2012, p.141)
In the Life article, the writer discusses the tragic scene at the podium where Malcolm X was shot and killed. The writer organized the details of events revolving around the scuffle in the hall then to the two pistol men who got away in the confusion.
The writer from the Associated Press organized the news by first stating his ethnic background, his role, the time he was shot, where he was shot, and the types of gun use in the shooting. They also discussed the crime that was committed and the offender that were involved. (Chaffee p.142)
How does each writer interpret Malcolm X, his followers, the gunmen, and the significance of the assassination?
The writer from Life magazine portrayed Malcolm X as a leader who normally discussed his “flaying the hated white man”. .(Chaffee 2012, p.141)
The writer from the New York Post seemed to almost let his followers speak for his interpretation of the man Malcolm X. By taking quotes from his followers it let us interpret Malcolm X and the way the situation might have gone down from his followers’ point of view.(Chaffee 2012, p.141)
