Introduction
A family of transcription factors, the myocyte enhancer factor-2(MEF2) family, has been shown to play a pivotal role in morphogenesis and myogenesis of skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle cells. In vertebrates, there are four MEF2 genes, referred to as MEF2A,- B ,- C and -D that are located on different chromosomes. It is shown that the gene product of the MEF2 family had the special and unique domain, MADS-like region, which is very similar with the MADS-box domain and perform a similar function to bind the conserved A/T-rich DNA sequence in Euteleostomi. The MEF2 also contain anther functional regulatory domain, HJURP-C region. Now it is known that HJURP-C, Holliday junction regulator protein family C-terminal repeat, is the HJURP-like domain, which HJURP (Holliday Junction Recognition Protein) is a newly discovered gene reported to function at centromeres and to interact with CENPA.
The MEF2C is the first member of the family to be expressed with transcripts appearing in the precardiac mesoderm in the mouse by Pollock R, et al(1991), and is selectively expressed in differentiated myocytes and activates nearly all skeletal and cardiac muscle genes by binding a conserved A/T-rich DNA sequence in the control region of them. Recent studies have shown that MEF2C contains three alternative exons and generates six Mef2c isoforms in mice, and significant gene expression changes due to overexpression of Mef2c isoforms in both an isoforms -dependent and -independent manner. The bovine MEF2C gene is located in the chromosome 7, which contains 11 exons. The full length of the MEF2C gene is 153.3kb, and it produces MEF2C protein containing 441 amino acids. Despite, more and more data provide evidence that...
