“The cat” is a not well-known novel by the famous French writer Geoges Simenon. This novel, set in sixtys years in France, is not properly a crime story a lot of others written by the same author.
In this book there are only two characters: the husband and his wife. Both are over sixty years-old people who are at their second experience as married. They get married after their partners’ death but they come from two different social classes.
In fact the husband, before the pension, worked a builder even if he had the responsibility of other people. The wife, instead, she got married an important musician and his father was an owner of an important factory.
Became widow, she asks help to repair some damage in her hous. So they meet themselves and begin to stay togheter.
After few months they get married but early they discover that their habits are too different. She doesn’t accept his cat which usually sleeps with them next their bed. So when he finds the body of his dead cat he suspects his wife as the killer. The revenge is terrible: he tears the feathers of her parrot.
The spouses stop to speak to each other and start to communicate through notes. He often throws to her a small note where he writes only “the cat” to remind his wife the cat’s murder.
To conclude this novel describes the relationship between husband and wife when that degenerates and for this purpose the writer uses the paradox.
