Case Study: Execution of Scott Hain
In the case of the Execution of Scott Hain, both Hain and his friend Robert Lambert were drinking and looking for trouble. They came across a couple sitting in a car and proceeded to hijack the car with the couple still inside. After a while, they stopped the car and locked the couple in the trunk then Lambert set fire to car and burned both the man and woman alive. Scott Hain was convicted of felony murder and in April 2003 he was executed in Oklahoma by lethal injection. Robert Lambert is still on death row waiting execution.
The moral dilemma present in this case is whether or not it is wrong to administer the death penalty for juveniles. Many nations and people believe that it is a shameful practice to allow capital punishment for juveniles. Yet why should someone, regardless of age, be allowed to escape punishment from an absolutely heinous crime?
If a child in school bullies or beats up another child on the playground, that bully child is going to suffer punishment from the faculty of that school. He or she will possibly get detention or be suspended or expelled. There is no escaping that punishment if the student is found guilty of the incident. For example, me being 23 years old, if I go put a gun to someone’s head and kill them, I am going to be found guilty and be punished by law (possibly the death penalty) if I am caught. Why should someone who is 17 get a different sentence for the exact same crime?
Scott Hain committed an absolutely violent, heinous crime and suffered the consequences. He was executed for this crime, burning two people alive, which he committed as a juvenile. Was his punishment morally wrong or right? According to the Laws of the United States and more specifically Oklahoma, if you burn someone alive and are caught, there is a chance that you will be given the death penalty as your punishment.
