Human Papillomavirus Common Name-HPV

There are about 6 million new cases of genital HPV* in the United States each year. It’s estimated that 74% of them occur in 15-24 year olds.   This *number represents 30-40 genital HPV types, not just HPV Types 6, 11, 16 and 18.

HPV- Who Gets It? Human papillomavirus (HPV) affects both females and males. HPV transmission can happen with any kind of genital contact with someone who has HPV-intercourse isn’t necessary.   Many people who have HPV don’t even know it, because the virus often has no signs or symptoms. That means you can get the virus or pass it on to your partner without knowing it.   In the United States, an estimated 75% to 80% of males and females will be infected with HPC in their lifetime. For most, the virus will clear on its own, but when it doesn’t, HPV can have consequences:
Diseases causes by HPV: In Women: Pre-cancers and cancers: cervical, vaginal, and
Vulvar, Genital warts, loss of fertility.

In Men: Genital warts; Additional risk cardiovascular disease.

There are four types of the virus that one should know about.   These four strains of HPV cause the highest rate of infection and abnormal test results. Each year in the United States we diagnose 30 women with cervical cancer a day. That number is about 11,000 per year and is estimated that each minute there is a new case of genital warts in men and women.

HPV 6-11 cause about 90% of genital warts cases in females and males.
2 out of 3 people will get genital wart after have any kind of genital contact with someone infected. Even after treatment, genital warts can come back, 25% of cases come back within 3 months.

HPV Types 16 and 18 cause about 75% of cervical caser cases in females.
Unlike other cancers cervical cancer is not considered to be passes down through family genes. Cervical cancer is caused by certain types of a virus-human papillomavirus or HPV. (Abnormal cells)
