Changing our Lives
Donna Marie Smith
July 29, 2012

My decision to attend college was simple upon realizing my eligibility for tuition reimbursement, as in the past I doubted the affordability of an education. I waited years while becoming engaged in work without realizing that it is possible even with my hectic schedule to balance work and class, and still be dually efficient. I also knew attending a campus and arriving home late was not safe. My career as a commercial real estate assistant also requires a certain level of writing ability and communicative skills, so this was one of the factors that prompted me to attend school at this stage in life. I am now determined to pursue whatever resources available to achieve my goal of a B.A. degree. My goals are now attainable with the advent of online classes and laptops. Even 20 years ago, I could not imagine that I would have a second chance to pursue a degree having more adult responsibilities. As I reflect upon my life, I only realize that self-doubt and lack of confidence prevented me from pursuing higher goals. I am finally at the point where I feel anything is possible, and also surround myself with positive people who really have my best interest at heart. I shall also encourage others within my circle to “aim high” and not let negative people become a distraction. It is my sincere hope to continue the education process through patience, perseverance and discipline. There are now so many resources available to all, so virtually anyone with the desire and drive is able to attend college. I cannot imagine technology getting any better than it has.
