Today, many researchers believe that there are five main core personality traits such as: Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism and Openness. Basically, one of the big 5 personality dimensions is extraversion: This trait includes characteristics such as excitability, sociability, talkativeness, assertiveness and high amounts of emotional expressiveness. Extraversion is regarded as a valid predictor for two occupations involving social interaction, managers and sales (across criterion types).Besides that, the Need For Achievement is the extent to which an individual has a strong desire to perform challenging tasks well and to meet personal standards for excellence.
Furthermore, the relationship between personality type and achievement in an undergraduate physiology class can be illustrated through the following case study. The Myers- Briggs type indicator (MBTI) was given to 163 students in an undergraduate Human Physiology course at a large state university. Selected MBTI personality types were compared for achievement in the course using a t test to compare total points earned. High grades were earned by students stronger in the traits of introversion (I) and judgment (J), whereas the extra- verted (E) and perceptive (P) types had the lowest grades and dropped out of the course in the largest numbers. The author conducted the conclusion that there is definitely a strong relationship between personality and achievement.
It is strongly believed that the Human Physiology course is essentially combined with judgment, thinking, or introversion. Instructors and students need to be aware of the relationship between personality and learning so they can modify their teaching style and learning behaviour to enhance academic achievement.
