Dangerous effects of smoking
Many people around the world today are chain smokers despite knowing the harmful affects it has on ones health. Smoking is one of the largest problematic health issues in society. It is one of the leading causes of death with its thousands of harmful contents such as nicotine and tobacco. "More deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by all deaths from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined"(CDC, Smoking and Death). Many have argued that smoking should be banned in public places for health and economic reasons, however; this prohibition should escalate to banning cigarettes as a whole since they are injurious to health, can complicate pregnancy, and last but not least they harm innocent individuals through second hand smoking.
People turn to cigarette smoking for various reasons, one of them being that it is a stress reliever. Although smoking might relieve one’s stress temporarily, the consequences are severe. Damage to health is one of the biggest threats of smoking. Cigarette smoking is the leading causes of death worldwide even though it is the most preventable. “Worldwide, tobacco use causes more than 5 million deaths per year, and current trends show that tobacco use will cause more than 8 million deaths annually by 2030” (CDC, Smoking and Death). Smoking causes deaths as it leads to many complications such as heart disease, lung problems and numerous types of other cancers. It has been proven to increase the chances of getting larynx, pharynx, esophageal, bladder, kidney, cervical, uterine and stomach cancers. Statistics show that, “Coronary heart disease and stroke are increased 2 to 4 times” (CDC, Smoking and Increased Health Risks).   Coronary heart disease is just one of the many possible complications of smoking. Death caused by smoking can be prevented by finding a stress relieving solution that does not jeopardize one’s health.
