China's Education system

Over forty years ago, China's education system has once been considered an inferior learning structure. But all of that has changed, however, because today it is now perceived to be one of the best in the world. In fact, it has even surpassed the U.S. whom are usually viewed as providing countless learning opportunities to immigrants all over; the Chinese included. In China: The Educated Giant, the author Nicholas Kristof gives four reasons as to why China is continuing to supersede the United States. According to Kristof, China's education is becoming more advanced than America's, due to these four reasons.
The first reason the author believes that Chinese students do better than Americans is because they work harder, and unlike children in the U.S., spend more time in school. For example, in a village in Guangdong Province, the students arrive in school at 6:30 in the morning for extra tutoring and start class at 7:30. At 11:20 they go home for lunch and return to school from 2:00 through 5:00 PM. Every night, weekends included, they are given homework. Even during their eight-week summer vacation they do assignments every day for at least two hours. In contrast, American students spend only a mere 900 hours a year in school and 1,023 watching T.V.
The second reason Kristof gives is that teachers are respected and get compensated more. Because they hold education in such high regard, the Chinese town of Dongguan expended 21 percent of its budget on improving the system, compared to twenty years ago when there were no colleges. Now today, the town currently houses four universities. In the United States, teachers are not treated in the same respect. Many educators, especially in New York City are not paid very well, and are even subjected to neglect from some students and the City alike.
