Angela Daly – Head teacher’s Speech Day Report 2012
Mr Chairman, Sir Michael, Ladies and gentlemen, I ended last year’s report saying that I intended to savour every moment of the year ahead; well perhaps that was a little optimistic! There have been moments, of course, of huge satisfaction and much happiness but also moments of frustration and sadness. I can scarcely believe that I have less than two months left at Cranbrook but am very confident in passing the baton to John Weeds, an experienced head teacher of another selective, state boarding school and a humane, snooker loving classicist – perfect. Leaving with me are a number of teachers with varying lengths of service, some of whom have been at the heart of Cranbrook life for many years and others for whom it has been a springboard at the start of their career. Izzy Piper has been an invaluable member of the music department in which she has been a Graduate trainee teacher; our two language assistants, Adela and Melodie have done an excellent job in the Languages Department, helping the students prepare for their speaking exams. Kate Harvey also leaves us after two successful years to broaden her experience at Homewood School; also from languages we lose Jenny Birk whose excellent teaching in both French and Spanish over the last three years has been much appreciated. She moves to a new post in High Wycombe. Elizabeth Ahearne joined the Classics Department as a part time teacher in 2009. Clever, individual and an excellent class teacher, she has been an asset. I wish her all the best as she moves with her family to Singapore. Emma Brown has been part of the Art Department since 2003 starting as full time then moving to a part time post following the births of her two boys. A talented and creative teacher, Emma has also, recently been the driving force behind the reinvigorated ECO schools programme.
