I. INTRODUCTION “Rome was not built in a day”. This is an English proverb which is very true in this century also. It means it takes a long time to create something complicated or impressive. This indicates that development is a slow process. But it is true that it depends on the type of technology used. Development is indeed a essential aspect of human civilization. This has been taking place using various types of technologies. II. NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT National development is the ability of a county or countries to improve the social welfare of the people e.g. by providing social amenities like quality education, potable water, transportation infrastructure, medical care, etc. This is done by proper use of technology. From the very early days, human being has been using the appropriate technology. The invention of wheel made a drastic change in development. And its proper use at various places like vehicles, industries, etc. made the development better. But presently it is 21st century and this is the era of computers and competition, where development cannot be compromised. So we would see the two different type of technology necessary for national development. III. APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY Appropriate technology is an ideological movement (and its manifestations) originally articulated as "intermediate technology" by the economist Dr. Ernst Friedrich "Fritz" Schumacher in his influential work, Small is Beautiful. Though the nuances of appropriate technology vary between fields and applications, it is generally recognized as encompassing technological choice and application that is small-scale, labour-intensive, energy-efficient, environmentally sound, and locally controlled.
