OLERICULTURE: Olericluture is one of the most important subdivisions of agriculture. It's the applied life science of vegetable cultivation and production for the home or market. It deals with the production, storage, processing and marketing of vegetables. It encompasses crop establishment, including cultivar selection, seedbed preparation and establishment of vegetable crops by seed and transplants
There was a time when agriculture in the country was largely a gamble on monsoon, when our farmers had to depend almost wholly on rainwater for irrigation, his bullock-driven plough for tilling the soil and on organic fertilisers like cow-dung and garbage for manuring the soil. Modern agriculture in the Western countries is highly mechanised, and if we are to triumph over the vagaries of Nature, we have to supply the farmer with all the mechanical means of cultivation.
The high level agricultural production Western countries reached has come only after the Industrial Revolution of the last century. Formerly, it was believed that the rate of population growth would far exceed the agricultural produce. It was regarded almost as a law of nature. But scientific agriculture has disproved this theory.
We are now on the threshold of an agricultural revolution. The major problem now is the preservation of the environment. Dams were constructed across many of the main rivers and canals were dug out to provide water for the irrigation of the land. Tube-wells and pump-sets were provided to the farmers to irrigate the fields, where canal water could not reach. The use of better seeds, fertilizers and new techniques in agriculture, has brought about a revolution called the Green Revolution in agriculture. Our agriculture produce has increased manifolds, but the progress is still hot sufficient. Our population is growing at a fast rate. Every year we have" millions of new mouths to be feeded. We must check this fast growing population.
