Poem I Wonder

I WONDER BY JEANNIE KIRBY
I wonder why the grass is green
And why the wind is never seen?

Who taught the birds to build a nest
And told the trees to take rest?

O, when the moon is not quite round
Where can the missing bit be found?

Who lights the stars, when they blow out
And makes the lightning flash out?

Who paints the rainbow in the sky
And hangs the fluffy clouds so high?

Why it is now, do you suppose
That Dad won’t tell me, if he knows?

SYNOPSIS OF THE POEM

A child is questioning about the phenomena in nature. He asks about the colors of nature, for example, why the grass is green and not another color. He asks about why some things like the wind, is felt but not seen. He wonders about how things are programmed such as birds knowing how to build nests without being taught or why trees just grow to a certain height, then stop, and every year rests for the winter. He wonders why the moon is sometimes round and full and why sometimes it is in half of size. He asks about why the stars sometimes light up and sometimes are dim. He asks about why lightning happens, why rainbows happen and why clouds are high up in the sky and not lower down. And so far his father has been able to answer his questions.

THEME OF THE POEM

  1. A child’s curiosity. Children love to ask questions about anything that they do not understand.
  2. The wonders of nature. People who take time to stop and appreciate nature will find that nature is amazing.

SETTING OF POEM

The setting is the outdoors and nature. – green of grass and trees, the birds, nests, cloud and windy day. –talk about night, the sky, the stars and half-moon, lightning and rainbow. In fact, this is a poem about nature in all its splendor.

LANGUAGE OF THE POEM

  1. Written in simple language of a child – It does resemble a child’s nursery rhyme to a certain extent.
  2. Personification – eg: “They can take a rest” mean they resemble the trees are made to be like people.
