Diverse Cultures Essay
The names of the poems I am comparing are Blessing and Mama Dot.
The summaries of both poems are very different because Blessing is all about fanaticising over water, the boiling hot sun, in need of water and praying for water whereas Mama Dot is all about slavery and all of the slaves through one woman.
In Blessing the main theme is poverty. “There is never enough water.” This shows that they are so poor that there isn’t enough water and in poverty. The main theme in Mama Dot is poverty as well “Sold on Monday into slavery.” This shows that poverty isn’t just to do with money it shows that poverty can mean being owned, not given human rights e.c.t.
The second main theme in Blessing and Mama Dot is hope; “every man woman- child for streets around.” Shows that in Blessing everyone is hoping for water; “freed on Saturday -in a new century” Shows that in Mama dot the lady/the slave trade have finally got what they hoped for freedom.
In both Blessing and Mama Dot a common theme is thanking; “freed on Saturday” says that in Mama Dot she is thankful of being freed and not having to work no more; “from the huts – a congregation” says in Blessing that all of the community are together and thanking for the water.
The poetic devices used in Mama Dot are metaphors and imagery. Likewise in Blessing there are metaphors, alliteration, enjambment, imagery and similes.
The impact on me with the poem Blessing. It made me feel lucky, sad, guilty and sorry for the people that suffer like this and I have so many more privileges. Whereas in Mama Dot it made me feel lucky, sad and guilty for all...
