Social Issue: The Waste Problem in Hong Kong
  Dear Editor,

I am writing to discuss the mounting waste problem in Hong Kong which both Hong Kong government and Hong Kong citizen are concerning about. No sooner will the three landfills be saturated by 2019. Although there are many ways to reduce the waste, the volume of waste in Hong Kong is still increasing.
There are about 19000 tons of municipal solid waste – domestic, commercial and industrial waste are generated every day, are about 2.7 kilograms per head in Hong Kong which is five percent more per capita than the residents of Beijing. There are different solutions are raised from the Hong Kong government, like extending the landfill at Tseung Kwan O, building an incinerator on Shrk Kwu Chau and implementing the waste charging scheme. From my point of view, I do not agree the government expands the landfill because it cannot help anything, it cannot control the huge number of waste and it cannot tackle the root of problem. The volume of waste is still increasing.
On the other hand, recycling can be one of the methods which can help to reduce the amount of solid waste. Take Sweden as an example, they have a network of underground vacuum pipes to collect household rubbish. The waste is first sort at home and put into different-coloured bags. These were stored temporarily in inlet pipes that were then emptied at regular intervals by vacuum suction to nearby collecting stations, where the bags were sorted by colour and opened automatically. I think Hong Kong can emulate this method, like sorting waste into recyclable group and non-recyclable group at home which can lessen the number of transporting waste to the landfills.
Apart from the policy suggested from the Hong Kong government, the Hong Kong residents should also act now in their daily life e.g. reduce the domestic waste at home since it is the best and the most convenient solution to lower the number of waste. No one would love to...
